One name given to Mercury by the Egyptians was "Set in the evening twilight, a god in the morning twilight." In its evening phase Mercury was identified with the evil god Set, enemy of Osiris. In its morning phase, the planet was linked with another, kinder god.

The Babylonians called Mercury Nebu. He was the messenger of the gods and their keeper of records. Nebu was considered a wise god.
American Indians
The Skidi Pawnee tribe called Mercury "Little brother of the morning star."
